10 Basic Ways You Can Increase Computer Performance Without Using Programs

In today's high-tech, fast-paced world, we get frustrated when we wait more than a few seconds for something to load onto our computers. We feel like we are wasting our time. Not surprisingly, Business Wire reported that about 66% of Americans say one of their biggest disappointments is waiting for a system they know should be faster. A study was conducted in the United Kingdom for businesses. It revealed that slow computers can cost organizations 5.5 days of productivity loss per person per year.

Increase Computer Performance

Fortunately, if you find that it is running slower than it should, there are ways to make your computer run faster.

Here are 10 tips that can help speed up your computer, whether you have a Mac or a PC:

1. Prevent programs from starting automatically when the computer starts.

This is one of the major reasons why computers run slowly. Many computers automatically run programs in the background that use up your computer's memory and slow down your computer. Some programs, such as antivirus and firewall software, should be allowed to run automatically, while others (like iTunes or Microsoft Office) can be turned off until you really need them.

2. Delete/uninstall programs you don’t use.

Many new computers come with pre-installed programs that take up space and automatically run background processes. Go to your control panel and uninstall programs you don't need, make sure to keep the ones you need.

3. Clean up hard disk space.

It is important to check how much free space you have on your computer. If you have less than 15% free space, your computer may slow down. Delete old programs and files you don't need, or zip some of your files (especially large ones). If your computer is running slowly and the storage is not full, your operating system may have a problem.

4. Save old images or videos to cloud or external drive.

Bu, bilgisayarınızı da hızlandıracak çok fazla bellek alanı boşaltır. Keeping them in the cloud or on an external drive is also a nice way to back up old family photos you don't want to lose.

5. Run a disk cleanup or repair.

Your computer creates lots of temporary files every time you start it and/or use applications. These temporary files, such as internet history, cookies, and caches, take up a significant amount of space on your hard drive, making your system even slower. Disk cleanup/repair can clean up hundreds of megabytes by deleting temporary files, unnecessary system files, and even emptying your recycle bin.

6. Change your desktop computer's power plan to High Performance.

Computers have different power plans (usually Balance, Power Saver, and High Performance) to control how computers use power. Some settings reduce performance, optimizing battery life, but High Performance increases the speed and performance of the computer. Note that this will only work on the desktop, as the High Performance setting on the laptop will drain the battery.

7. Make sure that antivirus, spyware scanner, and anti-malware software are installed.

Your computer will be able to run faster if it doesn't spend time trying to manage bugs and viruses. This is also an additional layer of protection to keep your computer secure.

8. Run a disk defragmentation to optimize the efficiency of your hard drive.

When data is fragmented, your computer needs to look for bits of files that could spread across your hard drive. Defragmentation will organize your data and make room for your computer to access the data faster.

9.Add more RAM to your computer.

RAM is volatile storage memory used by your PC to run programs. The more programs you use, the more RAM you will need; and if you don't have enough, your computer will slow down. You can easily add more RAM by purchasing an extra memory stick, but you can replace it if needed or buy a completely new RAM.

10.Update your computer’s software.

Software updates will fix bugs and glitches that are causing your computer to run slower. Click the Start Button > All Programs > Windows Update > Check for Updates to check if your current software is up to date on Windows. On Mac, go to Apps under the Apple icon menu and click About This Mac.

You don't have to go out and buy a new computer or spend a lot of money to get it to run faster. As soon as you start noticing that your computer is slowing down, try these tips without getting frustrated and losing your patience.
